Liesl's father has just died when she sees a ghost for the first time. Po appears in her room to ask why she's stopped drawing. Outside her window, Will stands waiting for her to draw too. He likes to see her face illuminated in the window, it's a small reprieve from his fairly miserable life. Through a series of mistakes and misfortunes Will finds himself paired up with Liesl Po and Bundle(a ghost pet) on a wild adventure romping through the country.

This was such a sweet book. All the adults were horrible. That seems to be a typical thing in these sorts of books. Bundle is seriously the cutest thing in the world. I want one. Lauren did a great job crafting all the characters, especially Liesl and Will. They are both children of misfortune. Will has always been an orphan and is an apprentice to the wicked alchemist. Liesl and new to orphandom, but her stepmother has kept her locked in the attic for months, refusing to let her see her father, so she was practically an orphan already. I liked the world and the other world and the magic. This was just a fun and magical story. I loved the writing, it just gave that extra something to the whole story that made you feel like you were there and that there could be everywhere. Lots of fun twists and turns and befuddlement. You should all go pick this up, it's a great tale for all ages. A truly ineffable novel.

First Line:
"On the third night after the day her father died, Liesl saw a ghost."

Favorite Line:
"Mo did not give much thought to the pretty babbling girl he had seen in the street."
