Top Ten Tuesday

This week's topic is:
Top Ten Books I wish could have had sequels...
This was a really hard topic because most YA nowadays is already part of a series. There are few books that aren't and fewer books I wished there was more too. I scrounged around a bit and came up with a few though.

Another Little Piece - Kate Karyus Quinn
I felt like I wanted more from these characters. I didn't want the story to end.

Chime - Franny Billingsley

This book did include some loose ties that I would love to see revisited and concluded.

The Fault in Our Stars - John Green
I'd settle for another chapter.

Shadow Hills - Anastasia Hopcus

This is the first in a series, so it may be cheating to put it on here. It was been three years since this came out though and I am chomping at the bits to see what happens next.

Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore - Robin Sloan
I just never wanted to stop reading this book. I want more adventures.

Every Day - David Levithan
Six Earlier Days didn't help much with my desire for more A. I just loved A and want more.

Whisper - Phoebe Kitandis
This is another first in a series that came out three years ago and has left me craving a sequel.

The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls - Claire Legrand
This was just a lot of fun and I could use more of these two!

Lost at Sea - Bryan Lee O'Malley
This was a strange story but I would love more of it. I adore the Scott Pilgrim books and would love to see this extended too.

Huntress - Malinda Lo
This novel was just amazing and awesome and I'd love to revisit some of these characters and their world.

The Broke and the Bookish is a group of college aged and twenty somethings that have an unhealthy obsession with reading and would spend every last penny on books even if it meant skipping a few meals. We are the people  who lurk in the library, buy handbags based on how many books can be stashed in them, and who refer to characters in books as if they are personal friends.
We sought after other bookish college students to share in our love for reading and were brought together by the College Students group on Goodreads that was created in September 2008. Our desire to share great books with each other in and our tendency to be opinionated and passionate about all things book related naturally led to the birth of The Broke and the Bookish in June 2010.

Review: Lost at Sea - Bryan Lee O'Malley

Where I got it: Library
Rating: 4 stars
Cover Rating: 5 stars (Nice and simple, with great colors. My copy is more navy with brighter orange on the bottom.)
Genre: Young Adult
Publication Date: May 3, 2005
Publisher: Oni Press
Page Count: 160 p.
Buy it: Book Depository / Amazon

Raleigh is a girl lost at sea. After her parents divorced and she lost her best friend, she is just floating around. She ends up on a road trip home from California to Canada with a bunch of kids she sort of knows from school. They might get back to Canada eventually, but until then Raleigh has to try and make new friends and move on from the past.

What the heck is with all the cats?!?!? Seriously? Is there something I just don't get? Is it just that cats are associated with souls, so it only makes sense? Did Raleigh really lose her soul and sisters to the devil? Why couldn't Raleigh at least open that damned letter before the end of the novel?!?!? *breath*
Okay, regardless of my slew of questions, I did really enjoy this book. Raleigh's stream of consciousness flowed smooth and true. There were a lot of things on her mind and she got it all out on the quiet road ahead of her and her car mates. I guess Bryan Lee O'Malley is just weird. Scott Pilgrim was weird and Lost at Sea is weird. Things happen that leave you scratching your head, but all the characters seem okay with what's happening, so you feel like you're the odd one not them. I did love the drawings of the cats and went they went to go find the cat with Raleigh's soul. That whole part was hilarious and completely realistic...mostly. I could totally see my friends and I searching, during the wee hours of the morning, for a cat that contains someone's missing soul. It's fun and free and ridculous, but some things you just do without too many questions. I recommend this if you enjoyed the Scoot Pilgrim books, even if you didn't read this anyway. Unless you hated the books, then maybe this won't be up your alley.

First Line:
"I have a lot on my mind and not a lot to do so it's going to come out, all of it, and then, then, it may begin to make a sort of sense."

Favorite Lines:
"Hey, wake up. We have to go find Raleigh's soul, it's in a cat."

Review: Scott Pilgrim books 2-6 - Bryan Lee O'Malley

So, Scott Pilgrim is a wacky kid. Well, he's 23 or 24, so not technically a kid, but the way he carries on you wouldn't be too sure. I enjoyed this series. I was laughing my head off pretty much the whole time I sped through these books. They were just really hilarious and completely bizarre. Sometimes they were a little confusing, like in the beginning of book 2. It seemed like each page was a different scene and that there was no real time frame, just a collection of moments. I loved Scott's memory scenes, or lack of memory scenes. He really didn't remember that much. If you liked the movie and you like reading comics then check these out.

Review: Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life - Bryan Lee O'Malley

WherI got it: My collection
Rating: 4 stars

Cover Rating: 4 stars (It's cool)
Genre: Young Adult
Publication Date: August 18, 2004
Publisher: Oni Press
Page Count: 168 p.

Scott Pilgrim is dating a high schooler. But when a girl named Ramona rollerblades through Scott's head while making deliveries for Amazon.ca Scott becomes obsessed. He really wants to get to know her even at the cost of losing his current girlfriend. Then he finds out that Ramona has seven evil-ex-boyfriends that Scott has to defeat in order to date her. You just have to do what you have to do.

So this was a really strange read. I mean it was really awesome but very strange too. I mean seven evil-ex-boyfriends who have superpowers? Then Scott Pilgrim has to fight them, but he's a really fantastic fighter even though he's pretty much a bum? This is a very unrealistic comic, but that doesn't make any less awesome. If you want a very strange fast read make sure you check this out and then after you finish the series you can check on the movie too. I mean who doesn't love Michael Cera?

First Line:
"Scott Pilgrim is dating a high schooler!"

Favorite Line:
"Wait...let's pretend that I didn't say obsessed."

In My Mailbox #65

In My Mailbox brought to you by The Story Siren
For Review:
When the Stars Go Blue - Caridad Ferrer (Thanks St. Martin's Griffin!)
Dance is Soledad Reyes’s life. About to graduate from Miami’s Biscayne High School for the Performing Arts, she plans on spending her last summer at home teaching in a dance studio, saving money, and eventually auditioning for dance companies. That is, until fate intervenes in the form of fellow student Jonathan Crandall who has what sounds like an outrageous proposition: Forget teaching. Why not spend the summer performing in the intense environment of the competitive drum and bugle corps? The corps is going to be performing Carmen, and the opportunity to portray the character of the sultry gypsy proves too tempting for Soledad to pass up, as well as the opportunity to spend more time with Jonathan, who intrigues her in a way no boy ever has before.
But in an uncanny echo of the story they perform every evening, an unexpected competitor for Soledad's affections appears: Taz, a member of an all-star Spanish soccer team. One explosive encounter later Soledad finds not only her relationship with Jonathan threatened, but her entire future as a professional dancer.
(I already finished this one and loved it. Should have my review up this week.)

Bought/swaped:
Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life vol.1 - Bryan Lee O'Malley
Scott Pilgrim's life is totally sweet. He's 23 years old, he's in a rock band, he's "between jobs," and he's dating a cute high school girl. Nothing could possibly go wrong, unless a seriously mind-blowing, dangerously fashionable, rollerblading delivery girl named Ramona Flowers starts cruising through his dreams and sailing by him at parties. Will Scott's awesome life get turned upside-down? Will he have to face Ramona's seven evil ex-boyfriends in battle? The short answer is yes. The long answer is Scott Pilgrim, Volume 1: Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life.
(I already read this one too, I really need to get my hands on the rest of this series)

Elixir - Hilary Duff
As the daughter of a renowned surgeon and a prominent Washington D.C. politician, Clea Raymond has felt the glare of the spotlight her entire life. And though she dreads the paparazzi who track her every move, she herself is a talented photojournalist who takes refuge in a career that allows her to travel to the most exotic parts of the world.
