Sophie Archer just found out she was a demon, not a witch like she had previously believed. She also found out that the guy she was crushing on has to kill her. Archer is part of L'Occhio di Dio, or The Eye, these guys hunt Prodigum and kill them. On top of that, Sophie's grandmother, who is also a demon, was summoned by her classmates and Sophie had to kill her. She had a pretty rough semester. For the first time ever, Sophie meets her dad, and he suggests that she come stay with him for the summer. Though reluctant, Sophie decides if she can bring her friend along it shouldn't be too bad. Sophie had previously been told there are only two demons in the world, her and her father. When she shows up at Thorne Abbey however, there are two more. This can only mean that someone is raising demons, which can only mean they have nefarious purposes in mind. Once again Sophie is stuck in the middle of something big, and she'll have to master her powers if she wants to make it out in one piece.

First off, I liked Sophie way better in this one than in her first novel. She was much less snarky(though there was still plenty of it) and it made her a more enjoyable character overall. One thing I didn't understand entirely about Sophie is way she was all up in arms over the idea of being a demon. She was fine with being a witch, but clearly a demon is just a horrible thing. I realize that she had some trauma recently, watching her grandmother kill some of her classmates, but anyone could kill people especially a witch. It just seemed strange, that she was so worried about killing someone and that was her big thing about not wanting to be a demon. Serial killers can be human, witches have strong powers and can kill, vampires and shape-shifters could all snap one day. It just seemed an odd choice of reasoning. Moving on though, Cal versus Archer, or who should Sophie choose? This is the inner struggle of many a great novel, does the heroine end up with the brooding, scary bad boy? or should she settle down to a quite life with the good guy, best friend? I was certainly on Team Cal at the beginning of this book, I mean he hadn't tried to kill her, but Archer may have crept back into my heart with his good looks and sharp tongue. I eagerly await book three to see if this sorts itself out. I definitely recommend picking up this installment of Sophie Mercer, though you may want to wait. This book ends on such a note that I am dying for the next book, which doesn't come out until March 4, 2012! It will definitely be a long hard wait, this series is so addictive.

First Line:
"At a normal high school, having class outside on a gorgeous May day is usually pretty awesome."

Favorite Line:
"'Captain Mood Swing totally gives demons a bad name, which is quite an accomplishment.'"

  1. I certainly liked this book more than Hex Hall. That cliffhanger of an ending was especially good though I wish we didn't have to wait a year for the next book.

My impression was that Sophie believed that demons could only be evil-that she'd become a killer without choice whereas she knows that witches can be good. I think there is a stigma in her paranormal world too about being a demon. Good review!

  3. Yeah, when I looked up when the next one came out I almost cried. Total cliff-hanger.
I had the same question about her freak out over being part demon - especially when we learned that it all comes from the same place.
I love her snark though! She's so funny. And since her inner dialogue is a lot softer and more vulnerable I think it balances nicely.
This is one of my favorite series - so fun.
    Great review.
