Review: Fade to Blue - Sean Beaudoin

Where I got it: ARC from my Collection
Rating: 3 stars
Cover Rating: 3 stars (s-alright)
Genre: Young Adult
Publication Date: August 1, 2009
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Page Count: 200 p. (includes glossary)

One day Sophie Blue's father disappeared and no one knows what happened. Sophie has since noticed a Popsicle truck with tinted windows that seems to be everywhere. Kenny Fade is a popular basketball jock. He seems to have a normal life, up until he doesn't. The only thing linking Kenny and Sophie is that they are both starting to see and hear things that aren't really there.

It says that this book keeps you guessing until the last paragraph. It does because half the time you have no idea who's who and what the heck is going on. Why then did I give it a three star rating. Well, I liked it. I probably won't recommend it to many people and probably won't read it again; but I loved it's originality. One thing I'm wondering is how the title is pronounced. In the book the character Kenny's last name is pronounced fah-day. I'm wondering if these are the same? Anyone... anyone? It was a very interesting novel, something to do with death/virtual reality/reality/things not always being what they seem/fighting "the man"(not so much this last one *shrugs*). I'd say if you had already planned on reading it go for it, but be forewarned things get a little tricky to navigate once you're inside.

First Line:
"The place was packed."

Favorite Line:
"'Yo, dude, watch it, she's got and Uzi!'"

Review: Kiki Strike: Inside the Shadow City - Kirsten Miller

Where I got it: My Collection
Rating: 4.5 stars
Cover Rating: 4 stars (Great!)
Genre: Young Adult(I assume)
Publication Date: May 29, 2007
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA Children's Books
Page Count: 387 p.

One day Anaka Fishbein notices out her bedroom window a giant sinkhole in Central Park. Being a curious 12-year-old girl she decides to check it out. She climbs in and finds out that it is an underground apartment. This event also causes her to catch the eye of a girl named Kiki Strike. When Kiki Strike calls upon Anaka for a top secret mission, Anaka agrees. As their story progresses, with rats and Girl Scouts and lots of secrets and mistrust, Anaka has to decide what she is going to do and who is really her friend.

This book was so exciting! A cross between The Mysterious Benedict Society and Harriet the Spy with a pinch of feminism on top. A definite girl-power novel, full of action and espionage! I loved the concept of an underground world that no one really knows about. Kirsten Miller brings out the darker side of her New York quite marvelously. I wish I had friends like these, never a dull moment. Just when you thought that you had something figured out something else would happen and you would be left wondering if it's true or not. This is a definite must read with stronger appeal to the younger end of YA, but a treat to all ages. I loved Anaka's direct commentary "lessons" like "HOW TO FOLLOW SOMEONE... WITHOUT GETTING CAUGHT" and "HOW TO PREPARE FOR AN ADVENTURE". This book is so full of adventure that you will wish you could go on at lest one trek with The Irregulars. I am so looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of the sequel. This book was hard to put down but why would you want to?

First Line:
"TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: By taking the time to open this book, you've become a member of a very elite group: The Curious."

Favorite Line:
"I decided the real lesson to be learned from fairy tales is that things are rarely what they seem."

Look what I found!

So Sunday I went to Borders (I know its bad[no more books for me]) but I found two books there that are not out yet! I found Guardian of the Dead which isn't supposed to be out until April 1st but they had it there yesterday. I also found Brightly Woven (which I bought) which isn't due out until tomorrow. So, I guess the point to this post is head on down to your local bookstore, there might be a surprise or two waiting for you!

In My Mailbox brought to you by The Story Siren

Bought/Swapped:

How to Ditch Your Fairy - Justine Larbalestier
Welcome to New Avalon, where everyone has a personal fairy. Charlie's is a parking fairy. Problem is she's fourteen, can't drive, and doesn't want to. She hates her fairy. How to Ditch Your Fairy is the tale of her quest to ditch it and get a better one such as her best friend's clothes-shopping fairy or her worst enemy's all-boys-will-like-you fairy.

Prophecy of the Sisters - Michelle Zink
Twin sisters Lia and Alice Milthorpe have just become orphans. They have also become enemies. As they discover their roles in a prophecy that has turned generations of sisters against each other, the girls find themselves entangled in a mystery that involves a tattoo-like mark, their parents’ deaths, a boy, a book, and a lifetime of secrets.

Lia and Alice don’t know whom they can trust.

They just know they can’t trust each other.

Keeping You a Secret - Julie Anne Peters
Expectations. A girl meets a guy, falls in love, gets married, has sex, not necessarily in that order. Holland Jaeger is living up to the expectations. But when she meets Cece, the course of her life is changed forever. She falls in love with this girl—this out-and-proud lesbian. Holland's awakening to her own sexuality is the key to setting her free. Can Holland trust that the people she counts on most in her life will accept and embrace her newfound identity? Keeping their relationship a secret may prove to be the worst mistake Holland and Cece could ever make.

The Notebook Girls

An Abundance of Katherines - John Green
When it comes to relationships, everyone has a type. Colin Singleton's type is girls named Katherine. He has dated--and been dumped by--19 Katherines. In the wake of The K-19 Debacle, Colin--an anagram-obsessed washed-up child prodigy--heads out on a road trip with his overweight, Judge Judy-loving friend Hassan. With 10,000 dollars in his pocket and a feral hog on his trail, Colin is on a mission to prove a mathematical theorem he hopes will predict the future of any relationship (and conceivably win the girl).

Looking for Alaska - John Green
Miles Halter is fascinated by famous last words--and tired of his safe life at home. He leaves for boarding school to seek what the dying poet Francois Rabelais called the "Great Perhaps." Much awaits Miles at Culver Creek, including Alaska Young. Clever, funny, screwed-up, and dead sexy, Alaska will pull Miles into her labyrinth and catapult him into the Great Perhaps.

Need - Carrie Jones
Zara collects phobias the way other high school girls collect lipsticks. Little wonder, since life’s been pretty rough so far. Her father left, her stepfather just died, and her mother’s pretty much checked out. Now Zara’s living with her grandmother in sleepy, cold Maine so that she stays “safe.” Zara doesn’t think she’s in danger; she thinks her mother can’t deal.

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist - Rachel Cohn & David Levithan
It all starts when Nick asks Norah to be his girlfriend for five minutes. He only needs five minutes to avoid his ex-girlfriend, who’s just walked in to his band’s show. With a new guy. And then, with one kiss, Nick and Norah are off on an adventure set against the backdrop of New York City—and smack in the middle of all the joy, anxiety, confusion, and excitement of a first date.

Pirates - Celia Rees
The true and remarkable adventures of Minerva Sharpe & Nancy Kington, Female Pyrates. What would make two young women take to the high seas and a life of piracy? Nancy Kington is the daughter of a rich merchant, Minerva Sharpe a slave on her father’s plantation. Divided by birth and fortune, together these two find friendship and break the bounds of gender, race and social position to follow their own destiny.

Okay, so I have already read the last two but alas! I want to read them many times more and now I may. What did everyone else get this week? hmmmmm......

Review: Subrurban Glamour - Jamie McKelvie

Where I got it: My Collection
Rating: 3 stars
Cover Rating: 4.5 stars (The reason I bought it)
Genre: Young Adult/ Graphic novel
Publication Date: May 21, 2008
Publisher: Image Comics
Page Count: 104 p.

Astrid is emo. Astrid is a changeling. Astrid is sad. Astrid has imaginary friends. Astrid's imaginary friends are made real because of a place called Faerie. (If you've read The Iron King many of the same characters apply here. See: Oberon, Maeve, Titania)

It's hard to find graphic novels that cater exclusively to girls especially since the Minx comic line ended. Though to be fair there is a large amount of YA fiction that we enjoy more than boys. There were plenty of cliches in here and if you hate it when someone calls themselves emo, that is in here too. I loved the art style though very realistic in a comic book way. It was a fun story and I like how I got to revisit some of the characters from The Iron King. I just found out that there are more in this series and I will probably read those if I can get my hands on them for cheap (or free). I think if you enjoyed any of the Minx titles you'll enjoy this one too.

First Line:
"BRR BRR BRR BRR BRR BRR BRR BRR BRR BRR BRR BRR BRR"

Favorite Line:
"Bring me flesh and bring me blood."

Review: For Keeps - Natasha Friend

Where I got it: ARC from Penguin Book Group
Rating: 3.5 stars
Cover Rating: 3.5 stars (this is a very 3.5 book. Also, I think they changed the final cover.)
Genre: Young Adult
Publication Date: April 6, 2010
Publisher: Viking Juvenile
Page Count: 267 p.

Josie Gardner and her mother were a pair. Josie never met her father who moved away when her mom was pregnant. One day Josie and her mom spot Paul Tucci's (her father) parents in a store. Josie has to calm her mom down so that she doesn't have to keep hiding in the pet food aisle. Her mom soon after takes on a new boyfriend, who's a little weird and clingy. Josie starts up a relationship and her friend Liv starts up a non-relationship. Things seem to settle back to normal until Josie starts to uncover some truths neither she nor her mom were prepared to face.

This was a great book. Fortunately I was not in Josie's fatherless situation, but it made it a little hard to understand what she was going through at times. Natasha is a great writer though and kept me hooked until the very end. The characters all were very teenagery. They were jerks and smelly and mean and funny and young and hopeless. Love was in the air, or maybe just pheromones. Either way this was a delightful read about a girl who wasn't trying to figure out who she was but instead had her identity thrust upon her by coincidence.

First Line:
"It's the last Friday night in August, and instead of dancing on a table at Melanie Jaffin's party with the rest of the soon-to-be junior class, I am crouched behind a tower of Meow Mix in the pet-food aisle of Shop-Co, watching my mother hyperventilate."

Favorite Line:
"Do you know how many billions of bacteria infest the average surface of a public building? Do you know how many billions of microorganisms enter the pores of your skin through contact alone?"

Review: The Iron King - Julie Kagawa

Where I got it: Library
Rating: 4 stars
Cover Rating: 5 stars (Very nice and icy and eye-catching)
Genre: Young Adult
Publication Date: February 1, 2010
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Page Count: 363 p.

Meghan's father disappeared one day when she was six. He wasn't murdered he just vanished. She always felt like she was different from everyone else. Not just because her dad was gone and her step-dad didn't acknowledge her, but because every now and then something bizarre will happen. Though she knows she is strange she would have never have thought that her strangeness comes from being half fey. Meghan doesn't even want to believe that fey can exist, but when her brother goes missing she has no choice but to face the truth and get him back.

The Brothers Grimm would be proud. Julie Kagawa crafts a genuinely haunting fairy tale, full of blood, guts and romance. I really loved this book; it was so creepy and awesome! I can't believe I have to wait until August for a sequel. Honestly if you love fantasy and are not faint of heart you must read this book. There were things that bothered me, like how indecisive of her feelings Meghan was. One second she didn't believe, then she did, then she didn't. It was tricky to keep up with how she was feeling. As soon as the story got going however she seemed to just except that what was happening was, in fact, happening. I loved all the characters; they were fun, frisky and crass. I loved Puck! Although there were definitely elements of other stories in this novel, Julie made it her own with her vivid writing style. I don't want to give too much away but there are winter fey, a cat (think Cheshire), monsters, steampunk fey, summer fey, love interests, goblins, ogres, mermaids, sirens and so many more mythical creatures that everyone is sure to get their faeryland fix. This was a brilliant debut by Julie and I look forward to continuing to read her over and over again.

First Line:
"Ten years ago, on my sixth birthday, my father disappeared."

Favorite Line:
"Dark blood exploded in a fine spray, filling the air with a sickening coppery smell."

This week's Teaser Tuesday is from Kiki Strike: Inside the Shadow City - Kristen Miller
Teaser (page: 37)

"Not long afterward, a woman and her daughter were discovered one morning, marooned in the snow monkey habitat on the park zoo. Given the Frigid New York weather, they might have met a less amusing fate if the monkeys hadn't taken pity and huddled with them for warmth during the night."

Waiting On Wednesday #21

So I am sure that I'm not alone in really wanting to get my hands on this book. The cover is striking and the premise sounds amazing. I have read the first 6 pages on amazon a couple of times and I really just want this book to come out already.

for those of you who have not read a summary of this:

Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her "power" to sense dead bodies—or at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes the dead leave behind in the world . . . and the imprints that attach to their killers.

Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find dead birds her cat left for her. But now that a serial killer is terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he's claimed haunt her daily, Violet realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.

Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved by her hope that Jay's intentions are much more than friendly. But even as she's falling intensely in love, Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer . . . and becoming his prey herself.

This comes out March 16th so I leave you with a trailer.

For Review:
White Cat - Holly Black from Simon and Schuster

Cassel comes from a family of curse workers -- people who have the power to change your emotions, your memories, your luck, by the slightest touch of their hands. And since curse work is illegal, they're all mobsters, or con artists. Except for Cassel. He hasn't got the magic touch, so he's an outsider, the straight kid in a crooked family. You just have to ignore one small detail -- he killed his best friend, Lila, three years ago.

Ever since, Cassel has carefully built up a façade of normalcy, blending into the crowd. But his façade starts crumbling when he starts sleepwalking, propelled into the night by terrifying dreams about a white cat that wants to tell him something. He's noticing other disturbing things, too, including the strange behavior of his two brothers. They are keeping secrets from him, caught up in a mysterious plot. As Cassel begins to suspect he's part of a huge con game, he also wonders what really happened to Lila. Could she still be alive? To find that out, Cassel will have to out-con the conmen.

Review: The Murder of Bindy MacKenzie - Jaclyn Moriarty

Where I got it: Inter-library Loan
Rating: 3.5 stars
Cover Rating: 3 stars (meh)
Genre: Young Adult
Publication Date: October 1, 2006
Publisher: Arthur A. Levine Books
Page Count: 491 p.

Bindy Mackenzie is an over-achiever, but doesn't really realize it. She tries hard and gets good grades etc. and that's all that she cares about. Her parents tend to leave her on her own and she doesn't really have any friends except for Ernst von Schmerz. She has her school days completely mapped out until they introduce the new FAD (Friendship and Development) class. Here she is forced to miss study hall and interact with students who she describes as venomous. On top of this disgrace, someone wants to kill Bindy, and Bindy doesn't know who or why. Told in notes, memos, letters and philosophical musings The Murder of Bindy Mackenzie will keep you guessing until the end.

I was hoping this book to be as utterly amusing as The Year of Secret Assignments, and was thoroughly disappointed. Though at times this book was quite funny it didn't have quite the humor of the aforementioned title. I guess the big difference is the people telling the story, Bindy just simply isn't all that hilarious, and since she doesn't really have any buddies they could not be hilarious for her. I will say that this book did leave me wondering about what was going to happen until the end, a very good mystery. I did not like Bindy's father though he was a jerk. I am disappointed that Bindy did not notice what a jerk he was and instead admired him. I liked that this novel takes place in Ashbury school yet again, so I recognized some of the characters from The Year of Secret Assignments and Feeling Sorry for Celia. This book was enjoyable although not as good as TYOSA, so I suggest to read this only if you feel like knowing more about the fruity character Bindy that you read about in TYOSA.

First Line:
"I have never spoken to Bindy, but I am sure that behind her extremely annoying personality she is a beautiful human being."

Favorite Line:
"No offense, but someone needs to arrange a slow and painful death for you, Bindy."

Review Policy

I am more than happy to accept review copies from authors and publishers. I will also happily participate in hosting contests and authors for interviews. My reviews will always be 100% honest.  I can not assure that every book that I accept for review will get a review. I do try to only accept books that I will enjoy, but this does not always happen. If I do not like a book and choose to not finish reading it, I will not review it. I will however pass this book on to another blogger and hopefully they will enjoy it. My reviews include publisher information a cover rating and an overall rating, as well as a synopsis written by me and my thoughts on the title. I post my reviews on GoodReads and Amazon and try to post them on my library's website when appropriate.

Genres I enjoy: Young Adult literature is my main focus. I will, however, accept and review some Middle Grade titles and also some Adult titles with crossover appeal. To see a complete list of titles I have reviewed you may click here.

I do not prefer to read a series out of sequence. If you would like me to review a book that is part of a series that I have not read, I would like it if you could provide a copy of each of its previous titles. This way I can better review the book, I will also review each book in the series.

I will occasionally accept self-published books if it is something that I think I might enjoy. PLEASE NOTE: If your self-published book has a lot of editing mistakes it may take me a very long time to read it, if I even read it at all. Editing mistakes will slow down my reading a lot and if I do finish it, I will make note of this in the review, which will significantly lower it's rating.
I am currently not accepting any self published novels, unless I have worked with you in the past. I will make note of it when I am ready to accept more again. Thanks!

I do accept Kindle books.

How long until you review it? If the book is an ARC, I try to read and review the book in the month before or the month of it's release. If the book is already released then it may take me anywhere from 2-5 months to read and review it. If you have a specific time frame or date in mind feel free to ask!

FTC Disclaimer: Almost all of the books I receive for review are provided by the publisher or the author. I do not accept/receive monetary compensation for my reviews.

Thanks
